How to Choose an Operating Table

An operating table is one of the highest-stakes purchases a hospital makes – it needs to support the surgical team, the procedure, and the patient’s safety all at once. Here’s what actually matters when comparing OT tables, beyond just the price tag.

1. Match the Table to Your Procedures

A general-purpose OT table works for most routine surgeries, but orthopedic, neurosurgery, or urology procedures often need a specialized tabletop or attachments. Decide this before comparing models – it will narrow your options significantly.

2. Positioning and Adjustability

Look for height, tilt, and Trendelenburg / reverse-Trendelenburg adjustment as a baseline. The easier it is for the surgical team to reposition the patient mid-procedure, the less time is lost during surgery.

3. Manual vs Hydraulic vs Electric Control

Manual (crank) tables are the most affordable and require no power, making them a reasonable choice for lower-volume facilities. Hydraulic and electric tables offer faster, smoother repositioning – worth the extra cost for high-volume operation theatres.

4. Frame and Tabletop Material

Stainless steel construction is standard for OT tables because it withstands repeated high-level disinfection and long-term use without corroding. Check that the tabletop material is compatible with your sterilization protocol.

5. Imaging Compatibility

If your procedures require C-arm or X-ray imaging during surgery, confirm the tabletop is radiolucent in the required sections. This is easy to overlook until imaging day, when it’s too late.

6. Load Capacity

Check the table’s rated safe working load against your patient population – not just the “maximum capacity” listed in a spec sheet, but the load rating at full tilt and extension.

7. Safety Features

Self-locking joints, emergency stop controls, and secure patient restraint points are not optional extras – confirm they are standard on the model you’re evaluating.

8. Mobility

Heavy-duty, lockable castors matter if the table needs to move between theatres or be repositioned within the room.
