Stainless Steel vs Mild Steel Furniture

Stainless Steel vs Mild Steel Furniture

If you are sourcing hospital beds, trolleys, or instrument cabinets, you have probably noticed that most manufacturers offer the same product in two versions: Stainless Steel (SS) and Mild Steel (MS). Both look similar at first glance, but the difference matters a lot once the equipment is in daily use on a hospital floor.

Stainless Steel Hospital Furniture

Stainless steel is the standard choice for equipment that comes into frequent contact with disinfectants, bodily fluids, or sterilization processes – think ICU beds, OT tables, and instrument trolleys.

  • Corrosion resistance: Stainless steel does not rust, even with daily exposure to strong disinfectants and repeated washing.
  • Hygiene: Its non-porous surface is easier to clean and disinfect, which matters in infection-control-sensitive areas like ICUs and operation theatres.
  • Longevity: With minimal maintenance, stainless steel furniture typically lasts over a decade in active hospital use.
  • Higher upfront cost: The trade-off is a higher price per unit compared to mild steel.

Mild Steel (Powder-Coated) Hospital Furniture

Mild steel with a powder-coated finish is a practical option for furniture that sees less exposure to moisture and chemicals – bedside lockers, overbed tables, and general ward furniture.

  • Lower cost: A more budget-friendly option for large-scale procurement, such as fitting out an entire general ward.
  • Good strength: Suitable for furniture that is not routinely exposed to harsh sanitization.
  • Coating wears over time: The powder coat can chip with heavy use, exposing the metal underneath to corrosion.

Which One Should You Choose?

In practice, most hospitals use a mixed approach:

  • Stainless steel for ICU beds, OT tables, instrument trolleys, and anything in direct contact with patients during procedures or requiring frequent disinfection.
  • Mild steel (powder-coated) for general ward furniture, bedside lockers, and overbed tables where cost efficiency matters more than maximum corrosion resistance.

At OEM Corporation, most of our product lines – including beds, trolleys, and cabinets – are manufactured in both SS and MS Framework versions, so you can match the material to the budget and hygiene requirements of each department.
